چکیده

The north flowing Falkland / Malvinas Current has generated sediment drifts at a depth of 1200-1600 m in the Patagonian middle continental slope out of early Holocene hemipelagics, late Pleistocene ice rafted clastics, and Neogene fluvial sediments. Possibly there may be two generations of drifts, Pleistocene on the outer middle slope and Holocene on the inner shelf. The ice rafted debris originated in Antarctica, at a distance of 2000 to 4000 km south of Patagonia. Scattered over the upper and middle slopes, at depths ranging from 300 to 1400 m, are cold-water coral reefs of less than a meter to about ten of meters in relief. It is inferred that most of cold-water coral structures flourish as a consequence of the Falkland /Malvinas Current that concentrates the food supply at the reef sites. Growth of cold-water coral reefs, documented by digital submarine photographs on the upper slope, at a depth of 300/400 m, may be promoted by upwelling

Reefs of the deep: the biology and geology of cold-water coral ecosystems.

Coral reefs are generally associated with shallow tropical seas; however, recent deep-ocean exploration using advanced acoustics and submersibles has revealed unexpectedly widespread and diverse coral ecosystems in deep waters on continental shelves, slopes, seamounts, and ridge systems around the world. Advances reviewed here include the use of corals as paleoclimatic archives and their biogeo...

بررسی اثر پارامترهای فیزیکی ‌و ‌شیمیایی آب در پراکنش آبسنگ‌های مرجانی جزیره کیش

The present study sought to determine the interactions between coral reefs and physicochemical properties of water (depth, temperature, salinity, turbidity, dissolved oxygen, pH, chlorophyll a, and water current velocity) and seabed type and slope in Kish Island, Iran. The study area was divided into 19 zones (eight zones with and 11 without corals). Physicochemical properties of water for each...

The role of intermediate-depth currents in continental shelf–slope accretion: Canterbury Drifts, SW Pacific Ocean

The Late Oligocene to Recent Canterbury Drifts were deposited in water depths between c. 400 and c. 1500 m by northward-flowing, cold, intermediate-depth water masses: Subantarctic Mode Water (SAMW), Antarctic Intermediate Water (AAIW) and their predecessor current flows. Drift accumulation started at c. 24 Ma, fed by terrigenous sediment derived from the newly rising Alpine Fault plate boundar...

Cold-Water Coral Habitats in Submarine Canyons of the Bay of Biscay

The topographical and hydrological complexity of submarine canyons, coupled with high substratum heterogeneity, make them ideal environments for cold-water coral (CWC) habitats. These habitats, including reefs, are thought to provide important functions for many organisms. The canyons incising the continental slope of the Bay of Biscay have distinct morphological differences from the north to t...

Cyclone pumping, sediment partitioning and the development of the Great Barrier Reef shelf system: a review

The modern Great Barrier Reef (GBR) is part of the world’s largest and best known mixed terrigenous-carbonate continental margin. The GBR shelf contains three shore-parallel sedimentary belts: an inner shelf zone of terrigenous sedimentation at depths of 0–22m; a middle shelf zone of sediment starvation at depths of 22–40m; and an outer shelf reef tract with its inner edge at ca. 40m depth. The...
